At Precisely '2:22' Armie Hammer Joins a New Psychological Thriller

With his recent casting in high profile projects like The Lone Ranger and The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, the future is looking even brighter for The Social Network star Armie Hammer. Now a new project with the actor attached will be looking for buyers at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. Risky Biz reports Hammer is attached to star in 2:22, a psychological thriller from director Paul Currie, co-founder of Lightstream Pictures which is also behind the project. The story focuses on an air traffic controller named Dylan who is given a jolt when he narrowly avoids causing a mid air collision between two passenger planes.

Caused by a mysterious blinding light that happened at 2:22 in the morning, these strange occurrences continue and lead Dylan to meet Sarah, with whom he feels inexplicably linked. Together the two discover uncanny similarities with their current predicament and a double murder committed a generation ago. With a grim fate looming, Dylan must solve the mystery of 2:22 to preserve a love whose second chance has finally come. Sounds a little hokey, but with Hammer attached, maybe the Todd Stein and Nathan Parker scripted project can get picked up at Cannes. If all goes well, production will start this fall in Australia. After thoroughly enjoying Hammer's double duty performance in The Social Network, I'm looking forward to seeing how his career blossoms even more.

Barry Levinson Replaces Nick Cassavetes as Director on 'Gotti' Biopic

Initially, we heard Nick Cassavetes was going to be at the helm of a biopic about reformed criminal John Gotti Jr. and his mobster father, the late head of the Gambino crime family. Then January brought news of John Travolta playing the senior Gotti followed by the casting of Joe Pesci and Lindsay Lohan last month. But just recently, director Nick Cassavetes was forced to exit the film, which has been titled Gotti: Three Generations, due to scheduling issues with his indie drama Yellow. Now Variety reports director Barry Levinson (You Don't Know Jack, Rain Man) will replace Cassavetes as the director of this biopic.

As the title suggests, the story follows three generations of the Gotti family with an emphasis on the relationship between Gotti Sr. and his son, who chooses to turn his back on the mob code he grew up around. Pesci is playing Gotti deputy Angelo Ruggiero, and while we initially heard Lohan was playing Victoria Gotti, she will instead be playing the younger Gotti's wife Kim Gotti. Apparently this is the first time any member of the crime family has agreed to have their story told on the big screen. It's certainly a strange assembly of talent, so count me at least intrigued for now.

Paul W.S. Anderson Set to Direct 'Pompeii' Movie with Constantin Film

Are disaster movies coming back or is Paul W.S. Anderson just completely out of tune with Hollywood? Years ago, there was a project I was foaming at the mouth to see called Pompeii about the infamous volcano in Italy; Roman Polanski was on-board to direct and there were even giant sales banners on display at Cannes one year. That project ended up dying, but THR is reporting that another, completely new Pompeii film is in the works at German production company Constantin Film (Michael Clayton, Centurion, Resident Evil). And yep, Paul W.S. Anderson (currently finishing up The Three Musketeers 3D) is attached to direct.

THR says Pompeii will be a "period adventure movie" surrounding the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and the destruction of the ancient Roman city. They even reference Titanic, adding that it "will be anchored by a strong love story." Set in the late summer of 79 A.D., Pompeii revolves around the slave of a shipping tycoon who dreams of the day he can buy his freedom and marry his master's daughter. What the slave doesn't know is that she's already been promised to a corrupt Roman senator. Mt. Vesuvius erupts with the power of "40 nuclear bombs", but the slave is trapped on a ship headed for Naples, separated from his love, a gladiator trapped in the city's coliseum. As fire and ash destroy the only world he's ever known, the slave is determined to get back and rescue them. Constantin is financing/producing, Summit distributing in the US.

I'm pretty sure it's common knowledge that Paul W.S. Anderson is a guilty pleasure director, making the occasional good-only-for-entertainment-value movies that at least have great visuals. I wasn't really that interested in seeing him take on The Three Musketeers and to be honest, I'm not really that interested in seeing him do this, either. Period epics and disaster movies just aren't the in thing right now, it's all about sci-fi and comic book heroes and epic adventures. Pompeii is aiming to start shooting in spring of 2012 so we may not see it until 2013 anyway, but it's coming. The script is by Lee Batchler and Janet Scott Batchler.

We'll keep you updated, as this project was just announced. There was word at one point last year that Ridley Scott was going to produce the Pompeii project Polanski left behind, but I still believe this new Pompeii is something original from Constantin Film and Paul W.S. Anderson's mind.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Not Returning for Jon M. Chu's 'G.I. Joe' Sequel

In February we learned that Justin Bieber: Never Say Never director Jon M. Chu would sit in the director's chair for G.I. Joe 2, the sequel to 2009's action blockbuster G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. But then we also heard that besides the original film's director Stephen Sommers not returning to helm the film, most of the characters wouldn't be returning for the sequel with only Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes and Duke showing up for the sequel. At the time, we weren't sure if that included primary villains Cobra Commander and Destro, but Collider just heard straight from Joseph-Gordon Levitt that he won't reprise his role as the former.

Honestly, I'm hoping that maybe they're trying to keep his appearance in the film secret, but it really doesn't make sense for him not to return. So much time was spent setting up Cobra Commander as a villain that it seems silly for him not to return. The same can be said for Destro, so hopefully Christopher Eccleston will return to reprise his villainous role at least. Honestly, I don't know what to expect from the G.I. Joe sequel, but after being only mildly entertained by the first film, I can't say that it's a big concern of mine.

Focus Features Picks Up Wes Anderson's 'Moonrise Kingdom' Project

We already knew that director Wes Anderson had officially chosen his next film as Moonrise Kingdom, a project which he co-wrote with Roman Coppola (who previously worked with Anderson on The Darjeeling Limited). If the cast which includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman and regular Anderson collaborator Bill Murray wasn't exciting enough, Deadline has learned that Focus Features, the people who have brought us such spectacular films as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Pianist have now officially acquired the rights to the promising project.

The story follows two young adults who fall in love and run away in the 60's. Assuming that the lovers have disappeared, the leaders of their New England town go searching for them. Norton is playing a scout leader who brings his expertise to the search while Willis will play a character having an affair with McDormand's character, the missing girl's mother. Murray, on the other hand, will play the girl's father who, of course, has his own issues. Still no word on what role Schwartzman has in the film, but his presence is good enough for me. Always good to hear a fine company like Focus Features putting their weight behind a great filmmaker like Wes Anderson.
